My wife, Tiffany, and I gathered a few good looking pallets several months ago with plans to make stuff with them. It took us a little bit to get started but we finally finished a couple of projects. This was the first one.
Before I continue, I must apologize for the lack of pictures from the initial work. We were so caught up on the project that we didn’t take pictures until half way through. It won’t happen again 🙂
So, we had a few pallets mostly in good shape. We chose two that were about the same size. We took out some of the less desirable pieces off of the pallets and replaced them with better ones from pallets we had taken apart previously.
Before we started the build, we cleaned some of the crud the pallets with a nice, strong brush, and some bleach.
We used the 2x4s from another broken up pallet to make the legs/connection to the bottom pallet. We measured the height of the grill that we’re going to use as the grill/firepit so that the top sits just above the top of the table. As you see, the bottom pallet is face down and the planks are a bit rearranged. The middle part is where the grill will sit when it’s used.
We used nails and screws to build the table. The 2x4s are nailed on the inside of the pallets. After it was built, we used a sander to sand the entire table. Top to bottom. The pictures above show the sanded product.
From the local hardware store, we got four 3-inch wheels with brakes and attached them to each corner of the bottom.
After it was sanded and cleaned of debris, we used an outdoor deck stain. This particular one was the Olympic Elite Woodland Oil, Kona Brown. We got a quart from Lowes and still have plenty left for another coat. We gave it one coat and stopped there since we were pleased with the color.
Now, for the grill/firepit center. We wanted to add a little more so we decided to keep going and cut out a circle in the middle of the table top of about a centimeter wider than the circumference of the small grill we got at Walmart.
Before we cut out the circle, we screwed a piece of 2×4 to hold the pieces together. we wanted to be able to close the hole and use the full table.
We had to sand down the edges of the cover so it could easily fit the opening and sit on the 1/2 inch brackets that we added so the cover wouldn’t fall through. The cover fits flushed to the table.
After that was done, we stained the cover just like the rest of the table.
This is what the table looks like finished with the grill.
We liked this project. It was fun and our first so we learned a lot. We exercise a lot of caution while playing with fire and I hope you do to.
If you decide to add the grill, please exercise caution as you are building this table at your own risk. Safety first.
